Hi Gianluca,

that's really nice that you share your roadmap with us! Thank you very much!

There are really good things on the list. I like the new search and also the F2-key for renaming is good.

How will I flag an item to be hidden?

---
A question to the search feature: The elements are sorted by alphabetic order, right?
What about a counter of the starts of each menu item?
And if serached the search order could be alphabetic or by starts.

Topic "'One Instance Only' behavior" a message from Gianluca

It is a really difficult thing.
Consider that every application starts at least one process and this makes possible to check if it is already started, but only some application works with an active window.
Think about to SyMenu for example. During its activity SyMenu sleeps on your task bar and pop up when you call it.
In case similar to this I should call the application to try to put in foreground its main windows but what if I can't find one... And this is only an problem but there are others.

SyMenu to accomplish "the one instance only" feature currently works checking the process list and trying to find a process originated from the executable file your are trying to launch.
Consider that this method is not 100% safe because there are some programs that uses an executable file to launch another one (some portable programs for example). In this case SyMenu can't check the existence of the process and relaunches the program again.

Hello,
I just found SyMenu and it looks great so far!
However, I have one question - if 'One Instance Only' is checked and you try to start the application the second time, an error is shown - which I find not very useful. Wouldn't it be better to just switch to that application instead, without any error message ? In this case, you could start/switch to that application faster and easier.
Thank you.

The cloning function only works for single elements (not for SyContainer)

New feature "move an item among two elements" during drag and drop

The search works optionally for the text inside item names and not only in "start with" mode

It is possible to name a SySeparator element to allow predictable ordering inside a SyContainer

F2 key on a SyNode in configuration form allows to rename it

New command to expand and compress all folder in configuration form (shortcut F11, F12)

It is now possible to hide elements (shortcut F3). An hided item become invisible in contextual menu and in the search but exists and is visible in configuration form

A new file report is available in menu Options - System. It contains the full list of SyMenu items with their main attributes

The program realease could be scheduled for the end of June.

If you would like to share your comment you are welcome.

Topic "Feature Request - Hide Menu Items" a message from ineedh3lp

Greetings, Gianluca.

You're right, if an item is hidden then it won't show in the contextual menu, and it is like a deleted item in that regard, except it's not really deleted and can be easily reactivated any time in the same place. Yes, you could call it backup, but it's more like a filter, temporarily disabling items. The Trash folder idea sounds good, though I think that means actually moving the item there without referencing it's original location. My initial thought was to be able to hide an item and leave it in the same place where it was hidden.

There are several benefits: for example if I send my complex and organized configuration to a friend, he can hide whatever applications he is missing and reactivate them later after he installs those applications. All he has to do is re-enable an item and update the application exe. path if needed- the icons, descriptions, URL links and everything else will already be there.

Hello!

I would like to ask if it is possible to add in a future version of SyMenu the ability to hide SyMenu items. The reason for this is pretty obvious: I do not want to see certain items but I do not want to delete them from the list either, so the best solution would be to have a function to hide them and, of course, to show them again when needed.

I'm thinking something similar to how an item looks in the list when being queued for deletion (italic and stroked). Hidden items could be showed in the list editing panel as italic entries with red text- that would mean they're hidden items. The option to hide an item should be located in the contextual menu or the Item Manager menu together with all the other item options.

Thank you!

The reason is exactly the one you describe.
In Windows the left mouse button is actually used in a way that could collide with a mouse gesture management. The file dragging operation is one perfect example.

SyMenu monitors only the gesture on the right mouse button (or the center button/mouse wheel if you configure it in that way).
I can't understand why you have the problem with the left button instead.

How is SyMenu gesture configured in your case?
Topic "A Few More SyMenu Concerns" a message from ineedh3lp

Thank you for considering each point.

1 - Dragging a SyItem among two containers
I understand it is difficult and it's not that important either. I would've just helped speeding up reorganizing items. The "Move item up level" will have to do.

2 - Renaming separators
Yes, I would find renaming separators useful when sorting items. That way I can give the separator a specific name and predict its positioning after sorting, so manual repositioning isn't required.

3 - Multiple item selection
I understand this may pose a issue. This feature isn't an important one as well, just one that would've aided easier menu items configuration.

4 - Icon unique name
Thank you for adding this in the next version.

5 - SyContainer description
Let me give you an example for container description and URL: For example, I tend to organize my items similar to the way Softpedia does. So, If a container contains browser applications, the container's description would be Home > Windows > Internet > Browsers and the URL would be http://www.softpedia.com/get/Internet/Browsers/ The URL would be to link to something related to the description, so I believe it would be useful to have it too, actually I would be grateful if you'd add it. Or maybe give the option to enable description and URL fields in containers.

6 - Longer name for SyItem
Yes, please allow for unlimited characters in titles, even if the complete title is trimmed when displaying the menu. I really use SyMenu not only as an application launcher, but also as an applications map with names, descriptions, links (that's why I asked for container description and URL at the previous point).

7a - Copy SyItem with drag and drop
Yes. Since currently both left-drag and right-drag perform an item move operation, you could program SyMenu to do a copy operation when using right-drag.

7b - Introducing a link relation between SyItems
Well a copy is a copy. A link is a link.

The main reason I'm asking for this is because sometimes I want to have the same application in different containers (for mapping purposes), and when I update one instance, the other gets updated as well, but without having the linked item displayed multiple times when searching for the corresponding entry. Hmm, I think this would complicate things in the programming sequence, so you should probably forget about it and just add the ability to copy entries (7a).

-
edited by ineedh3lp on 4/16/2012

The default will always be "full" but if someone wants to work only with his items the compact view allows to group all menu options inside a single item, even the exit entry.
Topic "A Few More SyMenu Concerns" a message from Gianluca

Hi ineedh3lp.

I would like to thank you very much for your suggestions. SyMenu lives thanks to its community collaboration and renews itself at every release thanks to the users' suggestions.
This is the reason for which your participation is fundamental. So that don't apologize for your posts!!!

Here my replies.

1 - Dragging a SyItem among two containers
It's a really difficult feature to implement. I could try to solve it but I can't assure you that it will be implemented.

2 - Renaming separators
If you think that it could be useful I can implemented it easily.

3 - Multiple item selection
Well it is againsts the nature of a treeview. The problem is not the multiple selection inside the same node but the multiple selection inside more than a node. Windows itself doesn't allow the multiple selection inside the explorer treeview and I think that it is too difficult to implement in SyMenu. Anyway it is already possible to move an entire folder even with the current SyMenu version.

4 - Icon unique name
You are right. Wait the next version for this.

5 - SyContainer description
A description for containers could be really useful but I can't realize for which reason a container should have an url too.
Next version for the folder description.

6 - Longer name for SyItem
You are right. Current length limitation (35 char) is not due to xml limits but for other two reasons:
- a RAM economy because every SyItem resides into your PC memory during SyMenu execution;
- a graphical need because the SyItem names forces the contextual menu to be draw with a certain lenght.
I can create an option to let you decide the max length but inside the contextual menu the long name should be cut the same to avoid oversized menu.
I put this feature in my TODO list but with low priority

7a - Copy SyItem with drag and drop
The copy of items with a simple drag is a great idea. Maybe I'll be able to insert it directly in the next version.

7b - Introducing a link relation between SyItems
Well a copy is a copy. A link is a link.
If I understand well you would like to have a copy that stay automatically updated for some elements (I imagine they should be the path, the icon...) and that could be loose with other elements such as the program arguments, the home page, the name... You want me dead, don't you?

Topic "Easier SyMenuItem.xml access" a message from Gianluca

Hi guys.

Since some time I'm thinking about a new layer of options.

Currently SyMenu has a "core options layer" (SyMenuConfig.zip) that contains the customization you can set on Advanced - Options menu and an "items options layer" (SyMenuItem.zip) that contains the configuration for every SyItems.

There are some occasion in which I would like to have a third layer for particular reasons.
Think about a Firefox safe mode to understand what I mean.
For example in the past I needed this further layer to activate debug (in debug mode SyMenu writes a log of its activities). Today if I want to activate the debug mode I have to recompile SyMenu and to use this different version. What a great thing if the third layer could be use to activate and deactivate the debug mode, or to force SyMenu to maintain its files unzipped.

I thought that the third configuration layer could be based on the presence of some particular files inside the config folder.

For example if I want to maintain my config file unzipped I have to add an empty file called NOZIP.
If I want to activate the debug mode I have to add a file called DEBUG.
When I want to deactivate this particular mode I have to delete the correspondent file.
We can call them "Configuration flag files".
Every configuration flag file could be documented in the manual and will be available only for expert users.
This system is extensible with new idea and with new "alternative execution mode".

What do you think about that?
